Confidence to keep going
Not every road is predictable and that's exactly the point.
The all-new Subaru Outback is engineered to adapt, combining the balance of a Boxer engine with the stability of always-on Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive to deliver control across changing conditions.
City streets, highways or unsealed roads, it stays composed, capable and ready for whatever's next.
2.5L Boxer Engine - Smooth, efficient performance
The 2.5-litre direct-injection Boxer engine in the all-new Subaru Outback is designed to deliver a smooth and predictable driving experience across a wide range of conditions.
With a focus on real-world usability, it provides balanced power delivery and responsive torque for everyday driving, from city streets to longer highway journeys.
Engineered for efficiency as well as performance, it offers a refined and composed feel, helping make every drive more comfortable and controlled.
2.4L Turbocharged Boxer Engine - Power that backs up capability
When the terrain gets tougher, performance needs to keep up.
The 2.4L turbocharged Boxer engine in Outback Wilderness delivers 194kW and 382Nm*, giving you stronger low-end response for climbing, towing and uneven terrain.
More pulling power. More confidence. More freedom to go further.
*Engine output figures are based on manufacturer testing under standardised laboratory conditions. Actual performance and results may vary depending on driving style, vehicle condition and environmental factors.
Lineartronic CVT - Smooth, responsive and refined
The all-new Subaru Outback features a Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), designed to deliver smooth and seamless acceleration across a wide range of driving conditions.
With improved responsiveness and reduced noise compared to the previous generation, it provides a more refined driving experience, helping every journey feel quieter and more composed.
Step shift behaviour creates a more natural acceleration feel, mimicking traditional gear changes for greater driver engagement. When you want more control, manual mode with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters allows you to take a more hands-on approach.
Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive - Confidence in every condition
Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is always on, continuously delivering power to all four wheels to help maximise traction and stability across a wide range of conditions.
With a balanced layout and even power distribution, it helps create a more stable and predictable driving experience, whether you're on sealed roads, gravel or low-grip surfaces.
Designed to adapt seamlessly as conditions change, it provides added confidence when driving in rain, on loose surfaces or when the road ahead is less certain.
Confidence when grip disappears
Loose surfaces, steep descents or unpredictable terrain, X-Mode is built for moments like these.
With selectable modes and dual-function X-Mode on Wilderness variants, the system automatically adjusts key systems to maximise traction and control.
You focus on the path ahead. The vehicle does the rest.
Steering & Handling
The all-new Subaru Outback features a dual-pinion electric power steering system, designed to deliver improved response and greater control across a range of driving conditions.
With a more direct steering feel, it provides better feedback through the wheel, helping you stay connected to the road whether you're navigating tight city streets or open highways.
A variable gear ratio adjusts steering input based on speed, making low-speed manoeuvres easier while maintaining stability and confidence at higher speeds.
Suspension & Ride Comfort - Balanced for every journey
The all-new Subaru Outback features a retuned suspension system designed to deliver improved ride comfort and greater stability across a wide range of driving conditions.
Whether you're travelling on city roads or longer highway journeys, it helps create a smoother, more composed driving experience with reduced vibration and better body control.
On Outback Wilderness, electronically controlled dampers adjust in real time to suit changing conditions, helping balance on-road comfort with added confidence on uneven or low-grip surfaces.
Body & Platform - Engineered for strength and stability
The all-new Subaru Outback is built on the Subaru Global Platform, designed to enhance overall strength, stability and driving confidence.
With increased body rigidity, it supports more precise handling and improved control, helping the vehicle feel more composed across a wide range of driving conditions.
By reducing vibration and flex through the structure, it also contributes to a smoother, more refined driving experience.
Driving Dynamics & Refinement - Engineered for a smoother drive
The all-new Subaru Outback has been engineered to reduce noise, vibration and harshness, helping create a smoother and more controlled driving experience.
Improvements across the platform, suspension and drivetrain work together to minimise road and engine noise, while enhancing overall body control and stability.
The result is a more refined drive, with greater composure across a wide range of conditions, from everyday commuting to longer journeys.

Take a Towing Detour with a Subaru
We believe Australia is the most beautiful country on the planet and one of the best ways to enjoy it is to get out on the road, take a few detours and discover some of our amazing places and people. Hitching up a caravan, trailer or boat to your car can help unlock some new adventures.
It's important to ensure you have a vehicle with the right towing capacity for whatever you plan to tow and that you understand the various towing weights and measures. The Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive SUVs shown below are all rated for towing, with corresponding Subaru Genuine towing accessories.
For inspiration for your next trip and to see some of our vehicles in towing action, check out Subaru's Great Australian Detour TV show.
For more information and tips on towing, watch our Towing video or keep scrolling.
Towing Capacity*
A car's towing capacity is influenced by a range of factors including its weight, engine power and torque, type of transmission, suspension, brakes and even tyres.
All-Wheel Drive vehicles offer an advantage over front or rear wheel drive vehicles for towing, as they can provide more traction by supplying power to all four wheels, reducing the likelyhood of wheel spin.
With Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, our Global Platform and famous Boxer Engine, Subaru Outback, Forester and Crosstrek all offer the capability to tow. See individual vehicle specifications for towing capacity.
Check out this Subaru towing detour to Mungo National Park, with the MY24 Subaru Outback AWD Touring XT towing a Jayco Swan Outback, the MY24 Subaru Forester 2.5i Sport AWD towing a Jayco Lark Outback and the MY24 Subaru Crosstrek AWD 2.0S towing a Jayco JPOD-X.
*Towing capacity is subject to regulatory requirements, and vehicle & equipment design limitations. Towing requires fitment of optional tow bar accessory. An Electronic Brake Controller may also be required. Refer to Owner's Manual for towing instructions. Ask your local Subaru Retailer for more information on Subaru towing capacity and Genuine Subaru towing accessories.
Towing Accessories
Subaru Genuine Accessories, fitted by an authorised Subaru Retailer, come with the peace of mind of the Subaru Genuine Parts and Accessories Warranty.
What you need will be determined by what you are towing:
• Tow Bar Kit - essential for towing
• Towing Mirrors - may be required, depending on trailer dimensions
• Electronic Brake Controller - must be fitted if towing more than 2,000kg, or if trailer is fitted with electric brakes, regardless of weight
Tip: Optional towing accessories will add weight to your car and need to be included in your Vehicle Payload and Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) calculations.
Check out Subaru Genuine Accessories for Outback, Forester and Crosstrek.
Vehicle Weights and Measures*
On top of Towing Capacity, there's a range of vehicle weights it's important to understand. Weights specified by the vehicle manufacturer should be complied with for safety and legal reasons.
• Tare Mass / Tare Weight
• Kerb Weight
• Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM)
• Gross Axle Laden Rating (GALR)
• Vehicle Payload
Additional weights when towing
• Tow Ball Download / Tow Ball Weight
• Gross Combined Mass (GCM) = vehicle + trailer
*Towing capacity is subject to regulatory requirements, and vehicle & equipment design limitations. Towing requires fitment of optional tow bar accessory. An Electronic Brake Controller may also be required. Refer to Owner's Manual for towing instructions. Ask your local Subaru Retailer for more information on Subaru towing capacity and Genuine Subaru towing accessories.
Vehicle Payload*
The load capacity of your vehicle is determined by weight, not available cargo space. It's the weight of everything in or added onto the car.
It's important to manage the payload to keep the vehicle within its Gross Vehicle Mass limit.
Tip: Maximum Vehicle Payload = Gross Vehicle Mass - Kerb Weight
Normal payload items may include
• Driver
• Any passengers
• Any pets
• Luggage/Other Gear
It must also include
• Optional equipment that wasn't standard on the car, including towing accessories
• Tow Ball Download/Tow Ball Weight (when towing)
*Towing capacity is subject to regulatory requirements, and vehicle & equipment design limitations. Towing requires fitment of optional tow bar accessory. An Electronic Brake Controller may also be required. Refer to Owner's Manual for towing instructions. Ask your local Subaru Retailer for more information on Subaru towing capacity and Genuine Subaru towing accessories.
Trailer Weights and Measures
The term "trailer" covers everything you might tow behind your vehicle, like a box trailer, a camper trailer, a boat trailer or a caravan.
There are a range of weights that are specified by the trailer manufacturer that it's important to understand and comply with for legal and safety reasons.
• Trailer Tare weight
• Tow Ball Weight
• Trailer Payload
• Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM)
• Gross Trailer Mass (GTM)
Find out more about these weights and see some Jayco Trailers in action on this Subaru towing detour to Mungo National Park.
Tow Ball Download / Tow Ball Weight*
When a trailer is hitched to a car and the jockey wheel removed, around 10% of the weight of the trailer is transferred to the weight of the car, this is called Tow Ball Download or Tow Ball Weight.
The weight of the load in the trailer and how you distribute it impacts Tow Ball Download. Getting the correct amount of weight on the tow bar is essential for safe towing. If the weight is too heavy or too light it can impact stability and steering control.
This weight should be measured using appropriate scales to ensure accuracy and that it meets the vehicle specifications.
Tip: Remember to include Tow Ball Download as part of Vehicle Payload and Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) measurements.
Towing Checks & Safety
Safety should be your top priority when towing and that starts before you even set off. Always refer to your vehicle and trailer owner's documentation and operating manuals.
Here are a few tips:
• Check your car, trailer and combined assembly weights are within the specified limits
• Ensure you're hooked up correctly, everything is secure and check all lights are working
• Allow more time and space when braking and changing lanes
• Stay within the speed limit specified by the state or territory and the vehicle manufacturer
• Taking into consideration surrounding traffic and road conditions, give yourself more room when cornering - start wide and turn later
• Take frequent rest stops as towing can be more tiring than regular driving
If you haven't towed before it's worth doing a towing course to build your towing skills.
